Children and Poverty
- About 40% of people being served by Canada's food banks
are children under the age of 18
- In a "snapshot" survey of a number of Canadian
cities in March 1992, the percentages ranged from 29% to
66%.
- Canadian food bank need has grown to 800,000 people a
month in 1996, up from less than 400,000 people in early
1990, prior to the recession. An estimated 3 million
different people use a food bank in Canada each year.

- More than 25% of Canada's homeless are children.
- An estimated 1% of Canadians are homeless at some point
over the course of a year.

- Children were the largest single group of recipients,
making up 1,163,000 or 38% of the total estimated 3.1
million individuals on welfare as of March 31, 1994.

- While the number of drop-outs has declined over the past
decade, still almost twice as many poor teens aged 16 and
17 drop out before they complete high school, compared
with non-poor teens. An estimated 8% of poor teens drop
out of school each year; for non-poor youth, the rate is
5%
